Onan, now integrated into Cummins Inc., is a respected manufacturer of engines, generators, and power systems. With a rich history, the company overcame numerous challenges and acquisitions to become a renowned name in the industry. From its humble beginnings in the basement of David Onan’s house, the story of Onan Corporation is one of dedication, passion, and innovation.
The story of Onan is not just about machines; it’s about the people who dedicated their lives to building better machinery and prioritizing the needs of those around them. Founded by David Onan, a mechanical genius and humanitarian, Onan started as a small operation that grew into a major company, now part of Cummins Inc.
David Onan’s journey began in the automotive industry when he worked at P.J. Downes Co., a distributor of Rambler Motor Cars. He quickly realized that customers faced challenges in repairing or replacing broken car parts due to underdeveloped infrastructure. Seeking to address this, Onan moved to Hollis Co. (later Reinhard Brothers Co.), a wholesaler of motor car accessories and garage equipment, where he convinced the owner to create a department dedicated to repairing electrical parts of motor cars. He successfully managed this department, supervising 50 mechanics and handling up to 125 repairs daily.
In his spare time, Onan began producing tools in his basement to meet the needs of mechanics. He started marketing these tools across the country, receiving encouraging responses. As demand grew, he expanded his operations, hiring his first full-time employee in 1920 and setting up an office in his home. By 1922, Onan had moved to a larger facility to accommodate the growing business.
The Onan Corporation continued to grow, and in 1960, it was sold to Studebaker-Packard, which provided the capital needed for further expansion. After several more acquisitions, Cummins Inc. eventually acquired Onan, allowing the company to continue its legacy.
Today, under Cummins Inc., Onan offers a wide range of engines, generators, and power systems, including portable and industrial generators, diesel engines, and small construction equipment. These products are used in various applications, from hospitals and data centers to yachts and vehicles. Onan’s products and services are available worldwide through Cummins’ extensive network of distributors, dealers, and service centers.
